The American Gods cast is one of the most interesting ensembles on modern TV. It mixes veteran stars like Ian McShane and Gillian Anderson with newer actors who became famous through the show. Based on Neil Gaiman’s novel and developed for Starz by Bryan Fuller and Michael Green, the series followed gods old and new across three seasons. Many actors joined, left, or changed roles along the way. This guide covers each one.

Who Leads the American Gods Cast?
Three actors held the show together from Season 1 to Season 3: Ricky Whittle, Ian McShane and Emily Browning. They were the only main regulars to last the full run. Every other part of the cast changed around them.
Ricky Whittle as Shadow Moon
Ricky Whittle plays Shadow Moon, a man released from prison early after five years when his wife dies. He takes a job as a bodyguard for the mysterious Mr. Wednesday. That job pulls him into a hidden war between gods and a road trip across America.
Whittle came from British TV. He spent years as Calvin Valentine on Channel 4’s Hollyoaks from the 2000s, and he worked as a Reebok model before acting. US audiences first knew him as Lincoln on The 100, plus a recurring role on Mistresses.
Shadow was Whittle’s big break. In my view, his performance works because he plays Shadow as calm and skeptical. The audience discovers the magic through his doubts, which keeps the strange story grounded.
Ian McShane as Mr. Wednesday
Ian McShane plays Mr. Wednesday, a charismatic con man who is really an Old God. He recruits Shadow and plans a war against the New Gods. McShane makes Wednesday cunning, funny and dangerous all at once.
McShane’s career started in the 1960s. He played Heathcliff in Wuthering Heights and appeared in Jesus of Nazareth. British viewers loved him as the lead in Lovejoy. In the US, he made his name in Dallas and later as Al Swearengen in HBO’s Deadwood.
His film and TV credits since then include:
- Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (Blackbeard)
- Snow White and the Huntsman
- John Wick series (Winston)
- Game of Thrones
- Ray Donovan
That long career gave him the weight Wednesday needs. Few actors could sell a god who lies in every scene.
Emily Browning as Laura Moon
Emily Browning plays Laura Moon, Shadow’s wife. She dies suddenly just before his release, then returns as a walking corpse thanks to a lucky coin. Her second chance at life drives one of the show’s strongest storylines.
Browning is an Australian actress. As a child she appeared in The Man Who Sued God and Ghost Ship. She became widely known as Violet Baudelaire in Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events. Later films include The Uninvited, Sucker Punch and Legend.
The show expanded Laura far beyond the novel. Browning gives her a sharp, messy honesty. Her relationships with Shadow and Mad Sweeney become some of the best parts of the series.
The Old Gods: Key Supporting Actors
The Old Gods are deities brought to America by immigrants who once believed in them. Their power fades as worship disappears. These roles went to a mix of famous character actors and new faces.
Pablo Schreiber as Mad Sweeney, the Leprechaun
Pablo Schreiber plays Mad Sweeney, the unlucky leprechaun. Standing 6’5″, he is no tiny fairy. Sweeney loses his lucky coin to Laura and spends much of the show trying to get it back. Their fights and slow bond made the pair a fan favorite.
Schreiber is the half-brother of Liev Schreiber. His best-known roles include:
- Nick Sobotka in The Wire
- George “Pornstache” Mendez in Orange Is the New Black
- Weeds, Numb3rs and Law & Order: SVU
- Vicky Cristina Barcelona and The Brink
He also appeared in It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. Mad Sweeney was a big break for him as a lead-level figure. His run ended in Season 2, when Sweeney dies, which many fans still consider the show’s biggest loss.
Peter Stormare as Czernobog
Peter Stormare plays Czernobog, the Slavic “black god” of darkness from 12th-century folklore. He is grim and violent, and he is the dark counterpart to a good god. He plays a famous checkers game with Shadow for his life.
Stormare is a Swedish actor known for unsettling villains. He played Satan in Constantine, appeared in The Big Lebowski and Minority Report, and played John Abruzzi in Prison Break. He also had roles on The Blacklist and Entourage.
His Czernobog is frightening but oddly funny. That mix is exactly why the Chicago episodes stand out.
Cloris Leachman and the Zorya Sisters
Cloris Leachman plays Zorya Vechernyaya, the Evening Star. She lives with Czernobog and her two sisters from Slavic mythology. Martha Kelly plays Zorya Utrennyaya, the Morning Star, and Erika Kaar plays Zorya Polunochnaya, the Midnight Star.
Leachman’s career began in the 1940s and 1950s with Lassie, Rawhide and The Virginian. She won fame as Phyllis on The Mary Tyler Moore Show, which led to a spin-off. She also appeared in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and The Facts of Life.
Later she did plenty of voice work, including The Croods and Phineas and Ferb. She passed away in January 2021, the same month Season 3 premiered. Her warm, eerie Zorya was one of her last memorable TV roles.
Yetide Badaki as Bilquis
Yetide Badaki plays Bilquis, an ancient goddess of love based on the Queen of Sheba. She feeds on worship in a literal, shocking way. Her opening scene in Season 1 is one of the most talked-about moments of the show.
Badaki was a new actress for most viewers. She had small roles on Masters of Sex, Aquarius and NCIS before this part.
Over three seasons, Bilquis grows in importance. She moves from a surprising side character to a goddess trying to find her own path between both sides.
The New Gods and Their Actors
The New Gods represent what America worships now: technology, media and globalization. These actors played the villains of the story, though the line between good and bad often blurs.
Crispin Glover as Mr. World
Crispin Glover plays Mr. World, the leader of the New Gods and the god of globalization. He is controlled, strange and unpredictable. Glover’s unusual style suits a god who watches everything.
Glover is best known as George McFly, Marty McFly’s father, in Back to the Future. His other credits include Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter, What’s Eating Gilbert Grape, Willard, Charlie’s Angels (the Thin Man) and Even Cowgirls Get the Blues.
In Season 3, Mr. World takes new forms. Danny Trejo, the star of Machete with more than 400 IMDb credits, plays one version. Dominique Jackson, known as Elektra Abundance on Pose, plays Ms. World.
Bruce Langley as Technical Boy
Bruce Langley plays Technical Boy, the New God of technology. He is petulant, impulsive and dangerous. He wants power and respect, but he often behaves like a spoiled kid.
Langley was a newcomer when the show cast him. That freshness helped. Technical Boy changes his look and attitude often, just as technology updates itself.
His arc also shows that New Gods can be fragile. Technical Boy fears being replaced, which gives an unhinged character some real depth.
Gillian Anderson as Media
Gillian Anderson plays Media, the New God of mass media and entertainment. She appears as famous pop culture figures, including Lucille Ball, David Bowie and Marilyn Monroe. Each form fits the message she wants to send.
Anderson became world-famous as Dana Scully on The X-Files from 1993, and she returned for its revival. She also starred in The Fall, Bleak House and The Last King of Scotland. She played Dr. Bedelia Du Maurier in Bryan Fuller’s Hannibal.
Her connection to Fuller mattered. When Fuller left after Season 1, Anderson left too. The show replaced Media with New Media, played by Kahyun Kim, in Season 2.
Mortals and Tricksters Worth Knowing
Not every important character is a god. A few human and disguised roles drew a lot of search interest from viewers.
Betty Gilpin as Audrey Burton
Betty Gilpin plays Audrey Burton, Laura’s best friend. Audrey’s husband Robbie died in the same car crash as Laura, and the two were having an affair. That betrayal sets up Audrey’s anger and her dark humor.
Her funniest moment is a road trip with dead Laura and Mad Sweeney. Gilpin turns a small role into a scene-stealer.
Viewers may know her from GLOW and Nurse Jackie. She appears in Seasons 1 and 2.
Jonathan Tucker as Low Key Lyesmith (Loki)
Jonathan Tucker plays Low Key Lyesmith, Shadow’s cellmate in prison. He seems like a friendly small-time thief who gives Shadow advice. Readers of Gaiman’s novel know the name hides something bigger.
Low Key Lyesmith is a disguise for Loki, the Norse trickster god. The name itself is a clue to his real identity.
Tucker brings a relaxed charm to the role. That easy warmth makes the trickster angle more effective once viewers connect the dots.
American Gods Cast Season 1 vs Season 2
The American Gods cast season 1 lineup changed a lot by Season 2. Fuller and Green left after the first season, and several actors followed them. New characters joined as the story moved toward the House on the Rock.

Season 2 also gave more time to Mousa Kraish as the Jinn, Omid Abtahi as Salim and Demore Barnes as Mr. Ibis. Sakina Jaffrey joined as Mama-Ji.
Orlando Jones’ Exit as Mr. Nancy
Orlando Jones played Mr. Nancy, the trickster spider god Anansi, in Seasons 1 and 2. His fiery speeches about Black history in America were among the show’s most powerful scenes.
In 2019, Jones posted a Twitter video saying he had been fired. He said new showrunner Charles Eglee felt Nancy sent the wrong message for Black America.
Starz responded that it simply did not renew his option because Nancy does not appear in the part of the story covered in Season 3. The exit left a clear gap in the show’s tone.
Season 3 American Gods Cast: New Faces in Lakeside
The season 3 American Gods cast moved Shadow to Lakeside, Wisconsin, where he hides under a new name. The town has a hidden mystery tied to missing teenagers. Season 3 premiered on Starz in January 2021 at 8 p.m. ET on Sundays, with Prime Video carrying it internationally.
| Actor | Character | Who They Are |
|---|---|---|
| Ashley Reyes | Cordelia | A college dropout with student debt who helps Wednesday with tech |
| Blythe Danner | Demeter | Greek goddess of the harvest and fertility, tied to Wednesday’s past |
| Marilyn Manson | Johan Wengren | Lead singer of Blood Death, a Viking-themed death metal band |
| Iwan Rheon | Liam Doyle | A cheerful, rebellious leprechaun |

| Eric Johnson | Chad Mulligan | Lakeside’s Chief of Police |
| Julia Sweeney | Ann-Marie Hinzelmann | Lakeside’s unofficial mayor |
| Herizen Guardiola | Oshun | A Yoruba goddess of love |
Several of these actors brought strong credits. Iwan Rheon is famous as Ramsay Bolton on Game of Thrones. Blythe Danner is an Emmy winner and the mother of Gwyneth Paltrow. Lela Loren is known for Power, and Eric Johnson for Fifty Shades of Grey.
Ashley Reyes had a Broadway background in The Play That Goes Wrong. Julia Sweeney appeared in Shrill, while Herizen Guardiola was known from The Get Down and Dare Me.
Season 3 was the last. Starz cancelled the show in March 2021, leaving the story unfinished on screen.
