How Old Is Arnold Schwarzenegger Now?
Arnold Schwarzenegger is 79 years old in 2026. He turned 79 on July 30, 2026, and he will turn 80 on July 30, 2027. That milestone is close enough that fans have already started counting down to it.
His public profile has stayed unusually consistent for someone his age. He still posts daily gym videos, records his podcast, and takes on acting work. In my experience writing about veteran celebrities, most people search their ages out of nostalgia. With Arnold, they usually search because they are surprised he is still this active.
Because his birth date is well documented, his age is easy to check at any point in time. If you want to work out how old he was during a specific event, subtract 1947 from the year. Then subtract one more year if the event took place before July 30.
Birth Date, Birthplace and Early Life in Austria
Arnold Alois Schwarzenegger was born in the small village of Thal, near Graz, Austria, two years after World War II ended. His father, Gustav Schwarzenegger, was a local police officer. His mother, Aurelia Jadrny, ran the household. Money was tight, and the family home was simple.
His father was strict and pushed him toward football. Young Arnold found his real interest elsewhere. He began weightlifting at about 15, and that became the entry point to everything that followed. The Austrian-born teenager later said he knew early that he wanted a bigger life in America.
He moved to the US in the late 1960s and built a name first in bodybuilding and then in film. He became an American citizen in 1983 and kept his Austrian citizenship as well. He still talks about Thal with real affection.
Bodybuilding Career: From Age 15 to Seven Mr. Olympia Titles
Arnold’s rise in bodybuilding was fast. He started lifting at 15, won a junior title in 1965, and in 1967 won his first Mr. Universe title in London at age 20. That made him the youngest Mr. Universe in history at the time.
Soon after, he moved to the US to train in California. That was the center of the sport, and he trained at the famous Gold’s Gym in Venice. His work ethic and stage presence made him the sport’s biggest name.
| Year | Milestone | Arnold’s Age |
|---|---|---|
| 1962 | Starts weightlifting | 15 |
| 1965 | Wins junior title | 18 |
| 1967 | First Mr. Universe title, London | 20 |
| 1970 | First Mr. Olympia title | 23 |
| 1975 | Sixth straight Mr. Olympia | 28 |
| 1977 | Profiled in Pumping Iron | 29–30 |
| 1980 | Seventh Mr. Olympia (comeback) | 33 |
The 1977 weightlifting documentary Pumping Iron brought him real fame outside bodybuilding. It showed his charm and his competitive mind games, and that opened Hollywood’s doors. If you watch it today, you can see the confidence that later carried him through films and politics.
Hollywood Career: Age at His Biggest Roles
Arnold’s first role came in 1969 with Hercules in New York, when he was about 22. He was credited as “Arnold Strong,” and his Austrian accent was dubbed over. Most actors would have stopped there. He didn’t, and by the mid-1980s he was one of the biggest celebrities in the world.
His run of hits came in his late 30s and early 40s. Commando (1985), Predator (1987), and Twins (1988) proved he could handle both action and comedy. Twins was a gamble that paid off, and Kindergarten Cop (1990) confirmed that audiences liked him in lighter roles.
| Film | Year | Arnold’s Age at Release |
|---|---|---|
| Hercules in New York | 1969 | 22 |
| Conan the Barbarian | 1982 | 34–35 |
| Commando | 1985 | 38 |
| Predator | 1987 | 39 |
| Twins | 1988 | 41 |
| Total Recall | 1990 | 42 |
| Kindergarten Cop | 1990 | 43 |
| Batman & Robin (Mr. Freeze) | 1997 | 49 |
| FUBAR (Netflix series) | 2023 | 75 |
Playing Mr. Freeze in Batman & Robin in 1997 was a low point critically, but it was a big payday. Years later, after leaving politics, he returned to entertainment. The comedy series FUBAR on Netflix in 2023 showed he could still lead a show in his mid-70s.
How Old Is Arnold Schwarzenegger in Terminator?
Arnold was 37 years old when The Terminator was released in October 1984. He filmed it in 1984 at age 36. The film earned around $78.3 million worldwide on a small budget, and it became his biggest breakthrough as a leading man.
Many people searching how old Arnold Schwarzenegger was in Terminator are actually thinking of the sequel. In Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991), he was 43. That film earned about $517.7 million worldwide and is still one of the most celebrated action movies ever made.
| Terminator Film | Year | Arnold’s Age |
|---|---|---|
| The Terminator | 1984 | 37 |
| Terminator 2: Judgment Day | 1991 | 43 |
| Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines | 2003 | 55 |
| Terminator Genisys | 2015 | 67 |
| Terminator: Dark Fate | 2019 | 72 |
Watching the films in order is a good way to see him age on screen. The T-800 goes from a cold killer in his 30s to a gray-haired protector in his 70s. Few actors have played the same role across 35 years, and that helps explain why the age question keeps coming up.
Political Career: Governor of California
Arnold entered politics in 2003, at age 56, during California’s recall election. He ran as a Republican and won, becoming the 38th governor of California. Many people doubted an action star could govern, but he won a second term in 2006.
He served two terms and left office in January 2011 because of the term limit, at age 63. His time in office covered budget battles, environmental policy, and political reform. That record still shapes how people see his varied career.
In August 2012, he announced the USC Schwarzenegger Institute for State and Global Policy at the University of Southern California. The institute focuses on bipartisan policy work, and it gave him a lasting role in public life after leaving the governor’s office.
How Old Is Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Wife?
Arnold’s former wife, Maria Shriver, is 70 years old. She was born on November 6, 1955, so she is about eight years younger than Arnold. She is a journalist, author, and member of the Kennedy family.
The couple married on April 26, 1986, when Arnold was 38 and Maria was 30. They separated in 2011 after it became public that Arnold had fathered a son with the family’s housekeeper. Their divorce was finalized in December 2021, roughly ten years after the separation.
Arnold is not remarried. Since the mid-2010s, his partner has been Heather Milligan, a physical therapist. He and Maria remain on friendly terms and appear together at family events, especially for their children and grandchildren.
Children and Grandchildren
Arnold has five children. With Maria Shriver he had Katherine, Christina, Patrick, and Christopher. He also has a son, Joseph Baena, born in 1997. Joseph has become a fitness and acting personality himself, and he looks strikingly like his father.
His eldest daughter, Katherine Schwarzenegger, married actor Chris Pratt in 2019, which made Pratt his son-in-law. Pratt also has a son, Jack, from his marriage to Anna Faris. Katherine and Chris have daughters Lyla and Eloise and have kept growing their family, with the couple expecting again in recent years.
His grandchildren call him “Opa,” the German word for grandpa. Family members often share birthday tributes for him. Chris Pratt has posted rare photos from family ski trips and time at home, calling himself lucky to have Arnold in the family.
Inside Arnold’s Home
Photos shared by family give a rare look at Arnold’s home life. In one kitchen photo Pratt posted, Arnold sits in a modern kitchen with a thick white beard. Framed portraits and family pictures fill the room.
Fans have noticed small personal details. He has a massage chair, a chess board he has played with his granddaughters, and decor with an American flag design. Arnold is also known for his pets, including a miniature horse, a donkey, and a spotted pig that has appeared in his videos.
The porch and bench areas show up often in family snapshots. They suggest a home built around grandchildren and family visits rather than celebrity show.
Birthday Celebrations, Workouts and Pump Club
Arnold has a birthday tradition: he works out. For his 77th birthday in 2024, he posted a gym video doing lat pulldowns and bicep curls in sunglasses. He told fans he wanted no gifts, just people training alongside him.
His 78th birthday continued the habit with a cycling video, and his 79th in 2026 followed a similar pattern. He posted workout photos on X captioned “This is 79” and celebrated with family through the week.
He also turned his birthdays into promotions for his fitness platform, Pump Club. In recent years, new Pump Club users who signed up around his birthday got their first year free. The roughly $100 yearly membership fee was refunded in two $50 installments. These sign-up bonuses brought in thousands of fans and drove a rise of more than 20% in new members during the birthday period.
For anyone his age who wants to stay active, his approach is simple and realistic:
- Train every day, even if it’s light
- Mix cycling or cardio with weight training
- Use machines like lat pulldowns to protect the joints
- Treat consistency as more important than intensity
Health and Recent Milestones
Arnold has been open about his health. He had heart surgeries years ago, and in March 2024 he had a pacemaker fitted. He shared the news openly and kept training, which matched his public message about staying useful at any age.
His recent years have been busy with projects:
| Date | Milestone |
|---|---|
| June 2023 | Three-part Netflix docuseries “Arnold” premiered |
| June 2023 | FUBAR launched on Netflix |
| October 2023 | Book “Be Useful: Seven Tools for Life” published |
| March 2024 | Pacemaker fitted |
| Ongoing | Daily Pump Club newsletter and podcast |
The docuseries covered his life story in three parts: bodybuilding, Hollywood, and politics. His book became a bestseller by giving readers practical life lessons instead of a standard memoir.
Net Worth and Height
Arnold Schwarzenegger’s net worth is estimated at $400–450 million. No exact figure is public. Most of the money came from his film career, especially his large salaries of the 1990s. Smart real estate investments and business ventures expanded it into a financial empire.
Bio sites list his height as 6 ft 2 in (1.88 m). People who meet him often say he looks shorter, and it is common for men to lose some height with age. In his competition years, his size made him look even bigger than his listed height.
Upcoming Projects
Arnold is set to play Santa Claus in The Man with the Bag, a holiday action-comedy for Prime Video. It’s a playful change from his tough-guy image and fits the lighter tone of his recent work.
He has also been attached for years to King Conan, a sequel to his 1982 classic Conan the Barbarian. The project has moved slowly, but fans still hope to see him return to the role that first made him a movie star.
